From September 20 to September 24, Yacht Club de Monaco hosted the Monaco: Capital of Yachting Experience event. The four-day event was the center of discussions around the current health and environmental challenges faced by the luxury yacht industry and potential ways to tackle them.

The Monaco yacht club event brought in a number of distinguished guests and industry experts including Swiss sailor Bertrand Stamm and South African explorer Mike Horn who was the guest of honor. However, the most exciting part of the Monaco: Capital of Yachting Experience event was its packed program which included the following:

  • Captain’s Forum on COVID-19 and Yachting
  • Launch of the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index
  • Debate on Hydrogen as a Fossil Fuel Alternative

All the discussions and presentations were streamed on Zoom and Facebook Live. Below are some of the highlights of this memorable Yacht Club de Monaco event.

M/Y Ragnar Begins The Four-Day Event

The Monaco: Capital of Yachting Experience event was kicked off on September 20 when M/Y Ragnar made its grand entrance into Port Hercule, where it docked at the YCM Marina. The Monaco fire-brigade welcomed the vessel with a water salute as per tradition.

The 68-meter explorer superyacht has ice-breaking capabilities and is known for its Arctic research expeditions. With a range of 6,000 nautical miles, M/Y Ragnar collects oceanographic and meteorological data to the international scientific community.1 A fitting vessel for the Monaco yacht club event.

Captain’s Forum On COVID-19’s Effects on Yachting

Medical experts and yachting industry leaders were invited to the forum to explain to members of the Captains’ Club how the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns ongoing impact on the yachting industry.2 Topics discussed included

  • Coronavirus modes of aerosol transmission
  • Conditions of propagation of the virus
  • The importance of barrier gestures
  • The need for required PCR testing
  • Brokerage sales and fleet movements during the pandemic
  • Superyacht construction completions during lockdown
  • The rise of boat sales over the summer

Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index Is Launched

The Yacht Club de Monaco event also oversaw the launch of the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index. Part of the Planetary Health Week organized by the Foundation Prince Albert II and under the aegis of the Monaco Capital of Yachting Experience, the launch on September 22 was overseen by YCM and Credit Suisse.

“The next decade will be a decisive one for the future of our planet. Climate change is one of our biggest challenges. In line with the United Nations sustainable development goals for 2030, the next ten years must focus on ocean science to underpin our scientific knowledge, encourage technical innovation and promote the emergence of new solutions to reverse – we hope – the cycle of decline in ocean health,” – HSH the Sovereign Prince Albert II of Monaco 3

The SEA Index is a state-of-the-art superyacht emissions measurement tool. Designed to measure the environmental impact of yacht design and use, the ultimate goal is for the SEA index to become a global industry standard providing transparent ecological ratings for superyachts.

“The climate emergency is a reality. Our industry knows it has to reinvent itself as the automobile sector has done. If we aspire to position ourselves as a center of excellence, it is up to us to take the initiative and lead by example. […] It is only by acting together that we will succeed in making our contribution to a more climate-friendly yachting sector that will do everything in its power to reduce the effects of air and sea pollution on health and the climate, and will encourage good practices across the board by owners and crew, ashore as well as on board.” – Bernard d’Alessandri, YCM General Secretary and President of Cluster Yachting Monaco 4
